Tax-Smart Giving: Why 2025 Is the Year to Give Generously

As 2025 comes to a close, now is the time to make a charitable gift that is both deeply meaningful and financially strategic. At Hospice Mississauga, your donation brings comfort, care, and compassion to thousands in our community — and if made before December 31, it can also offer you maximum tax benefits before changes take effect in 2026.

Why Give in 2025?

Starting in 2026, the federal government is introducing a 0.5% floor on charitable donation tax credits. This means that donors will only be able to claim credits on donations that exceed 0.5% of their net income — a change that will reduce the efficiency of many charitable gifts, especially for high-income and major donors.
Additionally, tax credits for large donations may decrease under future rate adjustments, making 2025 the most tax-effective year to make your impact.

Smart Giving Strategies to Use Before December 31:

  • Donate Appreciated Securities: Eliminate capital gains tax on publicly traded stocks or mutual funds (outside RRSPs/TFSAs) and receive a full donation receipt.
  • Use Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs): Contribute assets to a DAF before year-end for immediate tax relief, while recommending grants to charities like Hospice Mississauga over time.  Donate these assets to your favourite charity like Hospice Mississauga.
  • Beat the Deadline: Gifts must be received by December 31, 2025 — use online or electronic transfers to avoid postal delays.
  • Set Up Monthly Giving: Enjoy year-round impact and tax credits while creating predictable support for our essential programs.
  • Gift In-Kind: Real estate, cultural property, or other appreciated assets can unlock significant tax savings and charitable impact.
Your gift helps us support over 7,500 people each year — and in 2025, your generosity can go further than ever.
