My Wedding, Our Farewell, A Forever Moment for our Family.

I am Maya Dhanjal and my sister and our family experienced the benefits of having Hospice care here in Mississauga when my older sister Sabrina’s cancer became untreatable.  She was just 32 years old. 

When my sister’s health declined, Aarti and the team from Hospice Mississauga walked beside us through moments of sadness and laughter, hope and angst, grief, and even joy.

Yes, moments of joy during life’s most challenging time.

In addition to the support for Sabrina in our home and for emotional support for our family, the hospice helped in planning one last unforgettable gift: a wedding in our family living room. 

I was marrying Conor, my now husband, who is the love of my life. Sabrina had introduced me to him 10 years earlier. 

The wedding was a simple affair but full of traditions. It took place in the family living room, a special place for the family and full of so many memories. Everyone was dressed up, including Sabrina, who remained in her specialized bed. She was my Maid of Honour.

Conor, as per tradition, shared a special ring with Sabrina. A three-stone ring, to represent us as sisters and himself. A special touch to a day that had many memorable moments. 

The timing was perfect as Sabrina was able be a part of this amazing day. It was just three weeks later that Sabrina passed — surrounded by family, love, dignity, and peace. 

Today, I wear the special ring around my neck on Sabrina’s old necklace. It is a symbol of everlasting love, a moment frozen in time, yet living with me each day.

Hospice Mississauga  relies on community generosity for 50% of the funding needed to operate each year. This means they must raise an average of $5,800 in donations every business day to fund what the government does not.
