Hospice Mississauga Launches Split the Pot Lottery to Celebrate 40 Years of Compassionate Care

Mississauga, ON – Hospice Mississauga is thrilled to announce the launch of its Split the Pot Lottery, an exciting fundraising initiative to raise the needed funds to build the first dedicated Hospice Centre in Mississauga. We have the land, the plan, and permits, we are now raising the final dollars in the campaign.

“Our Split the Pot Lottery is more than a celebration — it’s a chance for our community to come together and create positive and compassionate change,” said Kitrina Fex, Executive Director of Hospice Mississauga. “Mississauga is Ontario’s third-largest city, yet we have never had a dedicated hospice centre. This facility will provide care tailored to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of individuals in need of end-of-life care when and where they need it.”

Tickets are now available. Hospice Mississauga relies on the community for 90% of the funding for this much needed centre. Unlike hospitals that receive 90% of their capital funding from the government we only receive 10% towards important projects. This project will allow people like Sabrina, a 32-year-old resident of Mississauga who chose to spend her final days with her family in a hospice centre, but had to leave Mississauga to do it.

Hospice care is critical for our healthcare system. While hospices save Ontario’s healthcare system $200 million annually, the province does not have the recommended hospice bed capacity needed to meet the needs of those in our communities who require compassionate end of life care. With only 3.7 hospice beds per 100,000 people — barely half of the recommended seven beds — patients who could receive dignified care in a hospice are not receiving it. Mississauga’s new Hospice Centre will help relieve pressure on local hospitals and provide individuals with the support they need to live their final days in dignity and comfort.

“Your ticket purchase is a win-win,” adds Fex. “You could win big while helping to create a Hospice Centre that ensures every resident in Mississauga has equitable access to the care they need how, when and where they need it most.”
